Israeli police have killed a Palestinian in Jerusalem who attacked and killed one Israeli and wounded four others.
According to the AFP news agency, the incident took place in a part of the city which Jews and Muslims claim as a holy place and have their own claim on it.Israeli police have confirmed the incident, but according to paramedics, the condition of one of the injured is critical, with serious injuries to one and minor injuries to three others.
Clashes between Israel and the Palestinians erupted after earlier violence in the area.
Doctors at a Jerusalem hospital later confirmed that a man had died of his injuries.
The paramedics said the Palestinian attacker was killed on the spot.
Two of the wounded were police officers, while the attacker was a resident of East Jerusalem who was about 40 years old.
Israeli Public Security Minister Omar Bar-Liu told reporters that the attacker belonged to Hamas and was a resident of the Shafat refugee camp, while his wife had left the country three days earlier.
Hamas's military wing has praised the attack but has not claimed responsibility. The statement described the attack as a "brave operation".
Hamas said in a statement that "our people will continue to resist the Zionist occupiers by all means until they are expelled from the Holy Land and all its territories."
EU Ambassador to Israel Dmitry Zanchev condemned the attack on civilians and said violence was not the answer.
