According to Syrian state media, the UAE Foreign Minister met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.
According to Arab News, the visit of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed is the first visit of a senior Emirati official since the outbreak of war in Syria a decade ago.
"President Bashar al-Assad has received UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed," the state news agency SANA reported.During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and ways to enhance cooperation in various fields of common interest.
The UAE severed ties with Syria in February 2012 when protests demanding a change of government turned into a full-blown conflict.
However, in December 2018, the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus, after which the Gulf state asked Syria to return to the Arab League in March.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed also spoke to the Syrian president on the phone in October.
Following his visit to Damascus, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed arrived in Amman on Tuesday evening before meeting with Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday.
