Lebanese Information Minister George Qardahi formally tendered his resignation on Friday in a bid to "give Lebanon a chance."
"I will resign this afternoon," he told AFP. "I do not want to cling to this position. If it works, I want to give Lebanon a chance."A presidium official also confirmed that President Michel Aoun had received a call from George Qardahi confirming his resignation.
Lebanese leaders were under increasing pressure to remove the information minister, whose comments on the war in Yemen sparked a diplomatic row with Saudi Arabia.
According to Arab News, even the controversial George Qardahi had said that resigning from the government is not an option.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain have recalled their ambassadors from Lebanon and instructed Lebanese ambassadors to leave the country. The UAE also banned its citizens from traveling to Lebanon.
The decision was based on remarks made by George Qardahi in an interview before his appointment.
In the video, he said "the Iranian-backed Houthis were defending themselves and that the war in Yemen must end."
In his speech, Bashara al-Ra'i, a Christian religious leader in Lebanon, also called for "decisive action."
He said he wanted George Qardahi to resign.
