A video has gone viral on social media after at least two people were killed in riots in the eastern Indian state of Assam following a government crackdown on 'illegal encroachments', prompting a backlash. The administration has also ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The alleged video of the clash in Assam's Darang district shows a man jumping on the body of a dead man with a camera in his hand.
Reports later revealed that the jumper was a local photographer hired by the district administration to record the situation. The man has been identified and taken into custody following the incident.
The state government has ordered an inquiry into the matter. A press release issued by the Assam government's Home Department said the incident would be investigated under the leadership of a retired Guwahati High Court judge.
However, Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma said in Guwahati that the campaign to remove the encroachments would not be stopped.
