Russia is preparing to send an actress and a film director into orbit to shoot in space compared to the United States.
According to AFP, if successful, the Russian film crew will leave behind a Hollywood film project.
Tom Cruise, star of Mission Impossible, announced earlier this year that he would be working with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Russian actress Yulia Perrysild, 37, and film director Klim Shipenko, 38, will depart from the Bikaner Space Center in the former Soviet country of Kazakhstan.
The space team will be led by veteran astronaut Anton Shakespeare. The crew will spend 12 days on the International Space Station for the film The Challenge.
The story and budget of the film have not been revealed yet.
The Russian space agency Russia Cosmos says it is the story of a female surgeon who is sent to the International Space Station to rescue an astronaut.
Speaking at an online press conference on Monday, director Kalim Shipenko called the film "an experience".
The film director and actress is expected to return to Earth on October 17 with astronaut Oleg Novotsky.
Astronaut Oleg Novotsky has been on the International Space Station for the past six months.
